Deadly Industrial Accident Rocks Vizag Steel Plant
A major industrial disaster unfolded at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Monday when molten iron spilled during an operation inside the facility, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries among workers.
The incident occurred at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL)-operated steel plant, one of India’s largest steel manufacturing units. Emergency teams rushed to the scene as rescue operations began immediately following the accident.
Crane Operation Turns Fatal
Preliminary findings suggest that the tragedy occurred during the transportation of molten iron inside the steel melting section of the plant.
Officials believe a container carrying superheated molten metal malfunctioned while being lifted, causing thousands of degrees of molten iron to spill across the work area. Workers stationed nearby were caught in the path of the scorching metal, leading to catastrophic consequences.
Given the extreme temperatures involved in steel production, the accident rapidly turned into a large-scale emergency.
Rescue Teams Continue Search Efforts
Authorities launched an extensive rescue and evacuation operation soon after the mishap. Emergency responders, plant personnel and local officials have been working to locate affected workers and assess the full extent of the damage.
Officials indicated that the casualty figure could change as search efforts continue and all sections of the affected area are thoroughly inspected.
Several injured workers were shifted to hospitals, where doctors are treating severe burn injuries. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
PM Modi Announces Financial Assistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
Announcing relief from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, he stated that the families of those who lost their lives would receive financial assistance, while injured workers would also be provided compensation.
The Prime Minister said authorities were extending all possible support to those impacted by the accident.
Andhra Pradesh Government Orders Close Monitoring
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed sorrow over the incident and directed officials to ensure immediate assistance for victims and their families.
The state administration has been instructed to closely monitor rescue, medical and relief operations while coordinating with plant authorities and emergency services.
Safety Investigation Expected
A detailed inquiry is expected to examine what led to the accident and whether any operational or technical failures contributed to the tragedy.
Investigators are likely to review equipment performance, maintenance records, safety protocols and workplace procedures as part of the probe.
