Philippines Rocked By Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake
The Philippines experienced a major seismic event early Monday after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the region, triggering concerns over potential aftershocks and damage assessments.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was recorded at 5:07 AM IST and originated at a depth of 93 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.
In its official update posted on X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 7.7, On: 08/06/2026 05:07:45 IST, Lat: 5.635 N, Long: 125.147 E, Depth: 93 Km, Location: Philippines.”

Second Tremor Strikes Minutes Later
Just over ten minutes after the first quake, another strong tremor measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in the same region.
The NCS reported that the second earthquake occurred at 5:18 AM IST at a depth of 79 kilometres.
The agency said: “EQ of M: 6.4, On: 08/06/2026 05:18:10 IST, Lat: 5.605 N, Long: 125.408 E, Depth: 79 Km, Location: Philippines.”

The close timing and proximity of the two seismic events indicate intense tectonic activity in the area, though authorities had not immediately released reports of casualties or infrastructure damage.
Understanding The Depth Of The Earthquakes
The two earthquakes occurred at depths of 93 kilometres and 79 kilometres respectively, placing them within the category of intermediate-depth seismic events.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes are classified based on their depth below the Earth’s surface:
- Shallow earthquakes: 0 to 70 km
- Intermediate earthquakes: 70 to 300 km
- Deep earthquakes: 300 to 700 km
Seismic experts note that earthquakes occurring deeper than 70 kilometres are often referred to as deep-focus earthquakes, although they can still generate strong shaking across wide geographical areas.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the movement of multiple tectonic plates. As a result, the country regularly experiences seismic disturbances ranging from minor tremors to major earthquakes.
