The Congress party is preparing for a wide-ranging organisational reshuffle across multiple states as it gears up for key assembly elections scheduled next year.
According to media reports, the restructuring exercise will involve changes in state in-charges as well as Pradesh Congress Committee presidents in more than half a dozen states. The move is aimed at strengthening the party’s election machinery ahead of crucial electoral battles.
Top Leadership Review After High-Level Meeting
The proposed changes gained momentum after a recent meeting between Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and organisation general secretary KC Venugopal. During the discussion, the leadership reviewed state-wise performance and organisational gaps, leading to consensus on a revamp.
Party leaders believe this could be one of the most significant organisational overhauls under Kharge’s leadership.
Focus on Key Election States
The restructuring is being planned with an eye on states going to polls next year, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur. Strengthening grassroots organisation and leadership structure in these states is being treated as a top priority.
Congress is also closely tracking political developments in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, where elections are expected later. Except for Punjab, most of these states are likely to witness direct contests between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Possible Leadership Changes in Multiple States
A leadership transition is also expected in Rajasthan, where the current state party president has completed his term. Within the party, Sachin Pilot is being viewed as a strong contender for the post, according to sources.
In Delhi, the tenure of the current Pradesh Congress Committee chief is nearing completion, with senior leader Abhishek Dutt emerging as a leading name for the role.
Wider State-Level Reorganisation
Apart from Rajasthan and Delhi, changes are also likely in states including Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab. The party is also expected to appoint new state in-charges for Haryana, Assam, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, several of which have vacant organisational posts.
In Kerala, discussions are underway for a possible leadership shift in the state unit as part of the broader restructuring plan.
Election Strategy in Focus
The planned reshuffle is being seen as a strategic effort by the Congress leadership to rebuild its organisational strength ahead of a packed election cycle in 2026. States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh are expected to be central to the party’s electoral strategy.
Party leaders believe the changes will help improve coordination, candidate selection, and ground-level mobilisation as the Congress prepares for one of its most important electoral phases in recent years.
