‘Nothing to Worry About’: Here’s What DK Shivakumar Said After Minister Ramalinga Reddy Quit Over Portfolio Row

Karnataka Government Faces First Cabinet Challenge

Just days after taking charge as Karnataka Chief Minister, D. K. Shivakumar found himself dealing with the first major challenge within his newly formed cabinet after senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy announced his resignation over portfolio allocation.

The development sparked political discussion across the state, with questions emerging about cabinet management and internal coordination within the ruling Congress government.

Shivakumar Says Issue Will Be Resolved

Responding to the resignation, Shivakumar sought to downplay the controversy and indicated that discussions would be held to settle the matter.

According to the Chief Minister, Reddy had concerns about the responsibilities attached to the department assigned to him and preferred a different role within the government. Shivakumar maintained that there was no reason for alarm and expressed confidence that the disagreement could be resolved through dialogue.

He also highlighted his long-standing personal and political relationship with Reddy, describing him as one of his closest colleagues in government.

Dispute Centres Around Key Bengaluru Portfolio

The controversy erupted after Reddy was assigned the Major and Medium Irrigation Department instead of the Bengaluru Development portfolio, which he reportedly sought during cabinet formation discussions.

The veteran leader publicly announced his resignation, stating that he had expected to receive responsibility for Bengaluru’s development and infrastructure-related affairs.

Despite stepping down from the ministerial post, Reddy indicated that he would continue serving as an MLA.

Bengaluru Development Department Goes to Krishna Byre Gowda

While Shivakumar retained the crucial Finance portfolio, the Bengaluru Development Department was handed over to Krishna Byre Gowda, a senior Congress leader and experienced legislator from Bengaluru.

The department is regarded as one of the most influential portfolios in Karnataka due to its role in managing infrastructure projects, urban planning and development initiatives in the state capital.
