EC Blocks 68 Lakh Cyber Attacks During Election Counting As Results Platforms Face Massive Digital Assault

The Election Commission of India on Wednesday revealed that its digital election infrastructure faced more than 68 lakh cyber intrusion attempts during the counting of votes for five Assembly elections earlier this week.

According to the poll body, the attacks targeted critical election-related online systems, including the official results platform, on May 4 when counting was underway across multiple states and Union Territories.

EC Says Security Systems Successfully Blocked Malicious Activity

In an official statement, the Election Commission said its cybersecurity architecture successfully neutralised the large-scale digital threats originating from both domestic and international sources.

The commission stated that its technology platform, ECINET, played a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted election management, smooth vote-count updates and transparent information flow during the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.

Officials said the system remained stable despite facing an unusually high volume of hostile traffic during the counting process.

ECINET Usage Surges During Elections

The Election Commission highlighted the growing adoption of the ECINET platform since its launch earlier this year.

The app has reportedly crossed 10 crore downloads and witnessed massive digital engagement during polling and counting operations.

The beta version of the platform was first tested during the Bihar elections in November 2025 before being fully implemented for the latest Assembly polls.

On polling dates held on April 9, April 23 and April 29, ECINET reportedly processed over 98 crore hits. During vote counting, the system handled traffic averaging nearly three crore hits every minute.

QR Code Entry System Introduced At Counting Centres

In another major technological shift, the Election Commission introduced a QR code-based photo identity verification system for counting centres for the first time.

The digital access system was implemented across all states and Union Territories where elections were conducted.

Officials said more than 3.2 lakh QR codes were generated on counting day to regulate entry into counting venues and strengthen security arrangements.

The commission stated that the move helped prevent unauthorised access and ensured only verified election personnel entered highly sensitive counting areas.

Focus On Digital Security In Elections

The latest elections witnessed one of the largest uses of digital infrastructure in India’s electoral process, with authorities relying heavily on real-time monitoring systems, online reporting and technology-based security mechanisms.

Election officials said the experience highlighted the increasing importance of cybersecurity preparedness as India’s election systems continue expanding digitally.
