Residents across Mumbai woke up to intense heat and humid weather conditions on Thursday as meteorological authorities issued a yellow alert for several regions in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The city recorded soaring temperatures early in the morning, with hot winds and rising humidity levels making outdoor conditions uncomfortable across multiple areas.
Yellow Alert Issued For Mumbai And Nearby Districts
The India Meteorological Department has placed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar district and Raigad district under a yellow alert for hot and humid weather conditions till May 9.
Weather officials expect daytime temperatures in Mumbai to touch nearly 36 degrees Celsius, while humidity is likely to remain high throughout the day.
By around 9:30 am on Thursday, temperatures in the city had already reached close to 30 degrees Celsius, indicating a hotter-than-usual day ahead.
Thane And Navi Mumbai Also Record Rising Heat
Neighbouring regions including Navi Mumbai and Thane also experienced uncomfortable weather conditions during the morning hours.
According to weather observations, temperatures in these areas hovered around 32 degrees Celsius early in the day, with maximum temperatures expected to rise further and possibly reach 37 degrees Celsius later in the afternoon.
The combination of heat and humidity has increased the discomfort index across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Health Advisory Issued Amid Heatwave-Like Conditions
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during peak daytime hours as prolonged exposure to heat may lead to dehydration and exhaustion.
People have been encouraged to drink sufficient water, consume electrolyte-rich beverages such as coconut water and buttermilk, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity between noon and 4 pm.
Experts also recommend wearing loose cotton clothing, using sunscreen or caps while outdoors, and choosing lighter meals including fruits and salads during the ongoing hot spell.
Rain And Thunderstorm Activity Expected In Maharashtra
Even as Mumbai continues to face humid conditions, several districts across Maharashtra are likely to receive pre-monsoon rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The weather department has predicted moderate rain activity in regions including Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Beed, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv.
Some isolated places may also witness lightning activity and strong winds during evening hours.
Monsoon Still Weeks Away
Although parts of Navi Mumbai recently experienced brief pre-monsoon showers, there is currently no official confirmation regarding the arrival date of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai.
Traditionally, monsoon activity begins gradually in June before intensifying across Maharashtra during July.
