A dramatic security scare shook Washington late Saturday night when an armed man allegedly opened fire near the entrance of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Hilton Hotel, forcing security personnel to urgently evacuate US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance from the venue.
The terrifying incident unfolded as dignitaries, journalists, and political leaders gathered for the annual event, when the suspect reportedly attempted to breach a security checkpoint before firing multiple rounds, sending guests into panic.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and confusion inside the venue as people rushed for safety while law enforcement agents moved swiftly to neutralize the threat.
Authorities said the suspect was subdued within moments, preventing what could have turned into a major tragedy. President Trump and Vice President Vance were escorted out safely and were not injured during the incident.
According to CBS News, the accused has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California, though officials have not yet formally confirmed his identity. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect was heavily armed, carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Officials also stated that the gunman appeared to be acting alone, while federal investigators continue to examine the motive behind the attack.
Trump Dismisses Iran Link
Speculation quickly surfaced online over whether the incident might be connected to rising tensions involving Iran, but President Trump dismissed that possibility, saying investigators have found no evidence so far of any foreign connection.
Speaking briefly to reporters after the attack, Trump said, “It’s not going to deter me from winning the war in Iran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it, I really don’t think so, based on what we know.”
The President later praised security agencies for their rapid response, crediting them for preventing a larger disaster.
Trump Shares Video of Attack After Suspect Captured
In the aftermath of the shooting, Trump posted a dramatic video showing the suspect rushing toward the venue while firing, before being tackled and restrained by law enforcement officers.
He also shared an image on Truth Social showing the accused lying on the ground in custody, with his hands tied behind his back after being detained.
Thanking the officers involved, Trump wrote, “Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended.”
While praising the swift response, Trump also acknowledged that security arrangements at the venue must be strengthened, raising concerns about how an armed suspect managed to get so close to one of the country’s most high-profile political gatherings.
