In a major political move ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Indian tennis legend Leander Paes joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 31.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner joined the party at its headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar. He is expected to contest in the upcoming elections, adding a high-profile face to BJP’s campaign.

“This Is Responsibility”: What Paes Said

After joining the party, Paes thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party leadership, saying, “I would like to thank Prime Minister Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, and BJP leadership, I am grateful for the opportunity that has been given to me, this is not merely a ticket it is a responsibility, I have received the opportunity to serve the country and its youth, Khelo India is an excellent initiative and my intention is to focus on the youth with the same dedication and concentration.”

Can Paes Boost BJP’s Chances?

Political experts believe Paes’ entry could help BJP in urban areas like Kolkata.

His clean public image and strong recognition may attract middle-class voters, professionals, and sports enthusiasts. His popularity among youth could also help BJP build a fresh and aspirational connect beyond traditional politics.
