A major controversy has erupted ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) matches after a Congress MLA from Karnataka demanded complimentary tickets and VIP treatment for legislators.
Vijayanand S Kashappanavar, the MLA from Hungund, openly criticised the Karnataka State Cricket Association, accusing it of disrespecting elected representatives despite benefiting from government support.
He demanded at least five free tickets per MLA along with separate seating arrangements, stating that lawmakers should not be treated like the general public.
“We Can’t Stand in Queue,” Says MLA
Kashappanavar strongly objected to the current system of ticket distribution, claiming that MLAs were forced to stand in queues during previous matches.
“We are VIPs. We can’t stand in the queue. We went last time and had to stand in the queue. They are sending us to a gallery with the public. It’s not going to happen,” he said.
The demand includes exclusive seating for MLAs and their families, highlighting what he described as a lack of respect from KSCA.
Black Marketing Allegations Surface
The MLA also made serious allegations of black marketing of IPL tickets, claiming that prices are being inflated massively in the resale market.
“There is an IPL match starting on the 28th… MLAs and ministers complained that KSCA has not provided tickets despite receiving government facilities and security,” he said.
He further added, “Tickets are being sold in the black market, with prices rising from Rs 5,000 to Rs 35,000.”
The issue was raised inside the Assembly, where several legislators reportedly supported the demand for assured ticket quotas.
Issue Raised in Assembly, Speaker Suggests Solution
The matter was formally discussed in the Karnataka Assembly, with lawmakers urging intervention.
UT Khader proposed that the government should coordinate with KSCA to ensure that each MLA gets at least four tickets, along with proper arrangements for their families.
This suggestion aims to prevent further disputes and ensure smoother access for legislators during high-profile matches.
DK Shivakumar Responds
Responding to the controversy, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assured the Assembly that the issue would be taken up with KSCA officials.
He stated that MLAs are entitled to raise such concerns and promised to discuss the matter to find a resolution.
Political vs Public Debate Intensifies
The demand for free IPL tickets and VIP privileges has triggered a wider debate, with critics questioning whether elected representatives should seek special treatment at public sporting events.
While MLAs argue it is a matter of protocol and respect, many believe such demands highlight misuse of power and entitlement.
