Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday expanded his cabinet, inducting five new ministers in a significant political move ahead of key governance challenges in the state. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Raj Bhawan in Dehradun.
Who Are the New Ministers?
The leaders who took oath as ministers include:
- Khajan Das (Dehradun)
- Bharat Chaudhary (Rudraprayag)
- Madan Kaushik (Haridwar)
- Pradeep Batra (Roorkee)
- Ram Singh Kaira (Nainital)
CM Dhami’s Message After Expansion
Congratulating the newly inducted ministers, Dhami said all of them bring significant political and social experience. He expressed confidence that the expanded cabinet will work together to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”
Cabinet Strength Back on Track
As per constitutional provisions, Uttarakhand can have a maximum of 12 ministers. The cabinet strength had earlier reduced due to unforeseen events, including the death of minister Chandan Ramdas in 2023 and the resignation of Prem Chand Agarwal last year.
With the latest expansion, the government has moved to stabilise its leadership structure and improve administrative efficiency.
Why This Expansion Matters
The cabinet reshuffle comes after repeated speculation over the past months. When the BJP returned to power in 2022, Dhami had taken oath along with eight ministers. However, vacancies over time had reduced the cabinet strength, making expansion necessary.
Political Significance
The inclusion of leaders from different regions indicates an attempt to balance representation across the state. It also signals the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its organisational grip and governance ahead of future political challenges.
With the new ministers onboard, the Dhami government is expected to accelerate decision-making and push key development initiatives across Uttarakhand.
