State-run oil marketing company Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has issued a public advisory urging citizens not to panic over viral social media claims suggesting a fuel shortage in the country. The company clarified that such reports are misleading and baseless, assuring consumers that petrol and diesel supplies remain adequate across India.

In a message shared with customers, BPCL stated that rumours circulating online about fuel shortages are inaccurate. The company emphasised that its supply chain and distribution networks are functioning normally and are capable of meeting nationwide demand.

“Claims of shortage in fuel supply circulating on social media are misleading and baseless. There is adequate availability of fuel in the country. Citizens are assured that there is no need for any concern. Using fuel wisely always helps,” the company said in its advisory.

Why Did Fuel Shortage Rumours Spread on Social Media?

Fuel shortage rumours recently spread quickly across several social media platforms, creating confusion among motorists in some areas. Reports also emerged of long queues at certain petrol pumps as people rushed to refuel their vehicles.

Industry experts say misinformation online can sometimes trigger panic buying even when there is no actual shortage. Authorities have urged citizens to verify information from official sources before reacting to viral posts.

Is There Really a Fuel Shortage in India?

Officials and oil marketing companies have clearly stated that there is no fuel shortage in the country. According to BPCL, fuel stocks remain stable and supply chains are operating normally.

India’s strong refining capacity and distribution network allow oil companies to maintain steady supply to petrol pumps and other fuel outlets across the country.

How the Government Monitors Fuel Supply in India

The petroleum sector in India is closely monitored by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The ministry coordinates with major public sector oil companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to ensure smooth production, distribution and supply of petroleum products.

Authorities have reiterated that fuel availability remains normal and advised the public not to rely on unverified information circulating on social media.

What Did BPCL Say About Petrol and Diesel Supply?

BPCL reiterated that there is adequate availability of petrol and diesel across the country and that the supply network is fully operational.

The company also noted that responsible fuel usage always helps maintain balance in demand and supply while ensuring efficient consumption.

India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserves Strengthen Supply Security

Officials also highlighted that India maintains strategic petroleum reserves, which act as a safeguard during global supply disruptions or market volatility.

These reserves, combined with the country’s large refining capacity, help ensure uninterrupted domestic fuel supply even during challenging global conditions.

Authorities Urge Citizens to Avoid Panic Buying

Experts warn that panic buying driven by rumours can temporarily disrupt local supply even when national stock levels are sufficient.

Government agencies and oil companies have therefore advised citizens to rely only on official announcements and verified information.

With BPCL’s clarification, authorities hope to calm public concerns and ensure normal fuel purchasing behaviour across the country.
