In a surprising development for air travellers, an international flight operated by IndiGo made an unexpected mid-air U-turn on Monday while flying from New Delhi to Manchester.
Flight 6E33, which had departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, reportedly reversed course near the border of Ethiopia before returning to Delhi.
The aircraft operating the route was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a long-haul wide-body aircraft commonly used for intercontinental routes. The airline has not yet confirmed the exact reason behind the sudden change in route.
Why Did the Delhi–Manchester Flight Return Mid-Air?
Officials have not issued an official explanation for the incident so far. Aviation sources indicated that the aircraft reversed course after flying for several hours, prompting speculation about possible operational or security-related concerns.

The carrier also said it is preparing contingency plans, including repatriation operations if necessary, depending on how the regional situation evolves.
Flight Cancellations Rise Amid Airspace Restrictions
Earlier this month, IndiGo announced that it had cancelled more than 500 flights to the Middle East and several international destinations between February 28 and March 3 due to evolving airspace restrictions.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the broader aviation impact has been significant. Data from the ministry showed that 1,221 flights operated by Indian airlines and 388 flights by foreign carriers were cancelled by March 3 because of the ongoing situation.
On March 3 alone, about 356 international flights departed from India, while 338 flights arrived at major airports across the country.

Industry analysts say the aviation sector is currently facing uncertainty as geopolitical tensions continue to influence global flight routes.
