Chandigarh: Chandigarh witnessed a decisive mayoral election on Thursday, January 29, as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Saurabh Joshi emerged victorious. Joshi secured 18 votes, outpacing his rivals Yogesh Dhingra of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who received 11 votes, and Congress candidate Gurpreet Gabbi, who garnered seven votes.

The election was conducted under the supervision of presiding officer Ramneek Singh Bedi. Unlike earlier polls decided through secret ballots, this time councillors voted by a show of hands, followed by verbal confirmation to validate their choice.

The outcome reflects the current composition of the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, where the BJP holds a majority with 18 councillors, AAP has 11, and Congress six. Adding a notable dimension to the poll, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari exercised his voting right as an ex-officio member, casting his vote for the Congress candidate.
