Mumbai: A fresh political controversy has shaken Maharashtra’s civic election atmosphere after a video allegedly involving Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar surfaced online, triggering strong reactions from opposition parties. The clip, widely circulated on social media, has led to accusations of intimidation, misuse of authority, and violations of election norms during the nomination process.

The issue gained traction after Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh shared the video on X, alleging that Narwekar was seen confronting former MP and MLC Haribhau Rathod during the filing of nomination papers. According to Singh, the video suggests that the Speaker questioned Rathod’s police security and made remarks indicating that his protection could be withdrawn. Singh accused Narwekar of using his position to influence police officials and interfere in the electoral process.

The Maharashtra Congress reacted sharply, calling the alleged conduct a serious breach of democratic principles. State Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal demanded the registration of a criminal case against the Speaker, claiming the incident amounted to a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct. He further alleged that government staff associated with Narwekar’s office were actively campaigning for his relatives, calling for action against them as well.

The controversy deepened after the State Election Commission (SEC) sought a detailed report from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on the allegations. The move indicated that the poll body is examining complaints related to conduct inside and around the Returning Officer’s office during the nomination period.

Adding to the political heat, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut raised concerns over alleged missing CCTV footage from the Returning Officer’s office on December 30. He questioned how surveillance footage from a sensitive election-related location could disappear, calling it a matter of grave concern for transparency and accountability.

Former MP Haribhau Rathod also supported the allegations, stating that objections were raised when he visited the Returning Officer’s office in connection with his son’s nomination for the Colaba civic seat. He claimed the atmosphere was hostile and undemocratic.

Responding to the storm, Rahul Narwekar denied all charges. He said his presence at the location was limited to ensuring law and order and rejected claims of threats or interference. Dismissing the allegations as politically motivated, Narwekar also denied any role in the alleged disappearance of CCTV footage, asserting that he had acted strictly within the law.
