Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has once again defied political sceptics by reinforcing his relevance in both national and state politics, but emerging power equations indicate that the road ahead may be far more turbulent. After delivering strong performances in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the recent Bihar Assembly polls, Nitish now faces growing internal and alliance-level pressures that could reshape the state’s political landscape in 2026.

In the Lok Sabha elections, Janata Dal (United) emerged as a key pillar of the National Democratic Alliance by securing 12 of the 16 seats it contested, making Nitish Kumar indispensable to the BJP-led government at the Centre. This was followed by the Assembly elections, where the NDA registered a sweeping victory. Although the BJP narrowly emerged as the single-largest party, JD(U)’s strong showing reaffirmed Nitish’s central role in the alliance and governance of Bihar.

Political observers credit Nitish Kumar’s sustained popularity to his focus on social welfare, especially women-centric schemes, improved road connectivity, rural electrification, and access to tap water across villages. These initiatives, coupled with his long administrative experience, helped maintain voter confidence despite criticism from rivals.

However, signs of strain within the NDA are becoming increasingly visible. Political circles in Patna are abuzz with speculation that the BJP may seek a leadership transition in Bihar before 2026. At the same time, claims of possible defections from opposition parties, particularly the RJD and Congress, are gaining traction, raising concerns about aggressive political realignments in the coming months.

Experts warn that Bihar could witness heightened political instability. There are apprehensions that attempts may also be made to weaken JD(U)’s parliamentary strength to consolidate the BJP’s position at the Centre. Such developments could place Nitish Kumar under unprecedented pressure, testing both his negotiating skills and political resilience.

On the governance front, Nitish Kumar has announced an ambitious roadmap to transform Bihar into an industrial and technology-driven hub in eastern India, projecting an investment target of ₹50 lakh crore over the next five years. While the announcement signals intent, economists remain cautious, pointing out that large-scale investments may remain elusive without assured markets and industrial ecosystems.
