Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday highlighted concerns over the demographic changes in the state, citing the increasing population of Bangladeshi-origin Muslims. Speaking to the media, Sarma referred to the 2011 census and projected figures for the upcoming census.
He said, “As per the 2011 census, there was 34% Muslim population in Assam. If we give away 3% Assamese Muslims, then the Bangladeshi-origin Muslim population was 31% in Assam. No census was conducted in 2021… When the census report comes out in 2027, the Bangladesh-origin Muslim population will be around 40%.”
