Chandigarh: In a proactive step to support farmers, the Haryana government has announced an increase in the subsidy on certified wheat seeds, raising it from Rs 1,000 per quintal last year to Rs 1,075 per quintal for the upcoming sowing season, officials said on Sunday, citing PTI.

Certified wheat seeds will be sold through government agencies, including HSDC, NSC, HAFED, HLRDL, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, and NFL, at a fixed price of Rs 3,000 per quintal, which works out to nearly Rs 1,200 per acre for farmers. The price has increased from Rs 2,875 per quintal last year due to a Rs 150 hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat and an additional Rs 50 per quintal incentive for seed-producing farmers.

A government statement said, “The state government has reduced the cost burden on the farmers by increasing the subsidy from Rs 1,000 per quintal to Rs 1,075 per quintal. This proactive measure will encourage timely sowing, promote the use of high-yielding and certified seed varieties, and ultimately lead to improved crop productivity and higher agricultural income.”

Haryana cultivates wheat on around 60–62 lakh acres annually. Of the 12–14 lakh quintals of certified wheat seeds sold each year, nearly 5.5 lakh quintals are distributed through government channels, with the remainder coming from private seed producers.
