In a major infrastructure boost, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the much-awaited Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor, a high-speed expressway set to drastically cut travel time between the two cities.
The 213-km-long access-controlled corridor will reduce travel time from over 6 hours to just around 2.5 hours, offering faster, smoother, and more reliable connectivity between Delhi and Dehradun.
What’s New: Faster Travel, Big Time Savings
The newly launched expressway is designed as a six-lane high-speed corridor passing through Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Travel Impact
- Earlier travel time: 6+ hours
- New travel time: ~2.5 hours
- Time saved: Over 3 hours
This means quicker weekend trips, faster logistics, and improved connectivity for daily commuters.
More Than a Road: Economic Boost Ahead
Addressing a gathering, PM Modi called the corridor a “pathway of progress”, highlighting its role beyond transportation.
He said, “Such infrastructure projects connect aspirations with opportunities.”
The expressway is expected to:
- Boost tourism in Uttarakhand
- Create logistics hubs and warehouses
- Support industrial growth along the route
Advanced Features for Safe Travel
The corridor comes equipped with modern infrastructure, including:
- Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS)
- Multiple interchanges and bridges
- Over 100 underpasses
- Seamless links to major expressways
These features aim to ensure safer and congestion-free travel.
Wildlife Protection a Key Highlight
One of the standout features is a 12-km elevated wildlife corridor, among the longest in Asia.
It includes:
- Animal underpasses
- Elephant corridors
- Tunnel near Daat Kali Temple
This ensures minimal disturbance to wildlife while maintaining ecological balance.
Cost, Toll and Benefits
Built at a cost of ₹11,800 crore, the expressway may have slightly higher toll charges compared to older routes.
However, benefits include:
- Fuel savings
- Reduced travel time
- Better driving experience
For same-day return travellers, the time saved is expected to outweigh the toll cost.
PM Modi’s Message and Cultural Connect
PM Modi also extended greetings on festivals like Baisakhi, Bohag Bihu, and Puthandu, and spoke about the upcoming Char Dham Yatra.
He urged citizens to maintain cleanliness in Uttarakhand, especially ahead of the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.
