Churachandpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met victims of the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur during his first visit to the northeastern state since the clashes erupted in May 2023.

Due to heavy rainfall, the Prime Minister traveled 65 km by road from Imphal Airport to Churachandpur, the Kuki-dominated area that was at the epicenter of the unrest. At the relief camps at the Peace Ground, he interacted with affected families and was accompanied by senior officials, including Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Locals welcomed him with traditional Zomie and Thadou Kuki shawls, and a young girl gifted him a portrait.

PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore in Churachandpur. Key initiatives include the Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage, and Asset Management Improvement Project worth over Rs 3,600 crore, five National Highway projects exceeding Rs 2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, and Working Women Hostels at nine locations.

Later in the day, the Prime Minister will visit Imphal, the Meitei-dominated capital, to meet victims and inaugurate projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore, aimed at rebuilding infrastructure and supporting affected communities.

The ethnic violence, which erupted on May 3, 2023, in Churachandpur between Kuki and Meitei communities, claimed over 250 lives, injured more than 1,000 people, and displaced over 60,000 residents.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi criticized PM Modi for the delayed visit, saying, “I am glad that he has decided after 2 years that it’s worth his visiting. He should have visited much longer before. It’s very unfortunate that he has allowed what is happening there to happen for so long, so many people to get killed, and so many people to go through so much strife before he has decided to visit.”
