New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, just hours before US President Donald Trump was scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
Following the discussion, PM Modi posted on X, thanking Putin for briefing him about his recent meeting with Trump in Alaska. “Thank you my friend, President Putin, for your phone call and for sharing insights on your recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” Modi wrote.
During the call, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s longstanding stance that the Ukraine conflict must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue, and underlined that New Delhi would continue to support all peace efforts.
Both leaders also reviewed the state of bilateral relations, emphasizing their intent to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. They agreed to remain in close communication in the coming days.
The timing of the conversation drew attention as it came just ahead of President Donald Trump’s crucial meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in Washington. The White House talks are being closely watched as Trump, despite no major breakthrough from his Alaska summit with Putin, hinted that peace negotiations could move faster if Kyiv agreed to cede the eastern Donbas region to Moscow—an idea Ukraine has firmly opposed.
