PM Modi Pays Last Respects to Shibu Soren

New Delhi: In a solemn tribute to one of India’s tallest tribal leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay his final respects to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and veteran politician Shibu Soren, who passed away earlier in the day after a prolonged illness.

The Prime Minister, deeply moved, met with the bereaved family, including Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Kalpana Soren, offering words of comfort and support. “Went to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay homage to Shri Shibu Soren Ji. Also met his family. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji and the admirers of Shri Shibu Soren Ji,” PM Modi shared in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by poignant photos from the hospital visit.

Earlier, PM Modi also expressed his sorrow in a tribute post: “Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”

The death of the 80-year-old political stalwart has cast a shadow over Jharkhand politics. Hemant Soren officially announced his father’s demise on X, calling it a personal and public loss of immense magnitude.

As a mark of deep respect, the Jharkhand Assembly’s Monsoon Session was adjourned sine die by Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato. The government has also declared a three-day state mourning from August 4 to August 6.

“In honour of the late Honourable former Chief Minister-cum-Rajya Sabha MP, the State Government has decided to observe three days of state mourning,” the official statement read.
