JMM Founder and Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren Passes Away at 81 After Prolonged Illness

New Dlehi: Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren passed away on Monday morning in Delhi at the age of 81. Soren had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he had been on life support for over a month following a stroke and worsening kidney complications.

The hospital confirmed that Soren was declared dead at 8:56 am.

His son and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced the loss in a deeply emotional message posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all… I have become ‘shunya’ (zero) today.”

Known affectionately as Dishom Guru, Shibu Soren was one of the tallest tribal leaders in Indian politics and a powerful voice for the Santhal community. His political journey began in the early 1970s when he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha alongside A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato, launching a movement that eventually led to the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state in 2000.

Born in Nemra village in the then-Ramgarh district of undivided Bihar, Soren’s life was shaped by grassroots struggles and tribal activism. He rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential political figures in eastern India.

Soren was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka, a constituency that became synonymous with his political identity. Over a span of four decades, he won eight Lok Sabha elections and served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, the second of which was still underway at the time of his passing.

Despite his iconic status, Soren’s political journey wasn’t without setbacks. In the 2019 general elections, he suffered a surprise defeat in Dumka, once considered his invincible stronghold, to BJP’s Nalin Soren by a margin of over 45,000 votes.

In addition to serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament, Shibu Soren held office as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times, though each tenure was short-lived due to shifting alliances and political turmoil. He also served briefly as Union Coal Minister, though his ministerial career faced turbulence due to legal controversies, including a now-overturned conviction.
