Mumbai: Global electric vehicle giant Tesla is finally making its long-anticipated debut in the Indian market, with the inauguration of its first showroom and Experience Centre scheduled for July 15 at the prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. This marks a significant milestone after years of stalled negotiations and policy roadblocks.
Sources confirm that invitations for the launch event have already been sent out, signaling Tesla’s firm commitment to its Indian foray. The company has also reportedly imported chargers, EV accessories, and Supercharger units worth nearly $1 million from the US and China in preparation for its rollout.
As part of its initial offering, Tesla is expected to launch up to six variants of the Model Y, with base models priced around $32,500 (₹28 lakh) and long-range versions at $46,000 (₹39 lakh). The company also aims to bring in a more affordable entry-level EV priced below $25,000 (₹22 lakh) in the future.
After Mumbai, Tesla’s second showroom is expected to open in Delhi’s Aerocity, with plans to expand operations in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai in the third quarter of 2025. This expansion aligns with India’s push toward e-mobility.
The Indian government recently revised its EV import policy, permitting manufacturers to import up to 8,000 electric vehicles annually at a reduced 15% import duty, down from the earlier range of 70–100%. This has opened the doors for Tesla and other global players to explore Indian markets more aggressively.
