BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi Over Silence on Karnataka Farmer Suicides, Accuses Him of Selective Empathy

Bengaluru: The political tug-of-war over farmer suicides has intensified, with the Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launching a sharp attack on Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of showing selective concern for farmers based on the ruling party in a state.

Rahul Gandhi recently targeted the Central government over rising farmer suicides in Maharashtra, sharing a report that revealed 767 farmer suicides in just three months. “These are not just numbers. They are shattered homes, grieving families, and lives lost to despair. Yet the government remains silent,” Gandhi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing what he called the Modi government’s “indifference.”

However, Karnataka BJP leader and former minister R. Ashoka questioned Gandhi’s silence on similar tragedies unfolding in Karnataka — a Congress-ruled state — where, according to BJP data, more than 1,180 farmers have ended their lives in the past 15 months.

“No visit to grieving families, no expression of sorrow, no demand for accountability from his own party’s government. Why this silence, Rahul ji? Is empathy only for non-Congress states?” Ashoka asked in a press briefing.

The BJP leader further accused Gandhi of using farmers’ distress for political mileage. “You speak of justice but refuse to seek it from within your own house. Is Chief Minister Siddaramaiah above criticism simply because he belongs to your party?” he added.

Ashoka emphasized that real leadership means holding one’s own party accountable, not just pointing fingers at opponents. “If Rahul Gandhi truly cares about farmers, Karnataka is where he should begin. Otherwise, his compassion appears insincere, and his outrage feels manufactured,” he stated.

The BJP also urged Gandhi to address what they termed “criminal neglect” by the Congress government in Karnataka, warning against reducing farmers to mere political talking points.
