MNS Supporters Allegedly Assault Shop Owner in Thane for Refusing to Speak Marathi; FIR Registered

Thane: Tensions flared in Bhayander, located in Maharashtra’s Thane district, after a group of men allegedly affiliated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) assaulted a shop owner who refused to converse in Marathi. The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday and has sparked fresh concerns over rising language-based hostilities in the state.

The group of men were seen wearing scarves bearing the emblem of Raj Thackeray-led MNS. They entered the shop and confronted the owner, reportedly insisting he speak in Marathi. When the shopkeeper declined, an argument ensued, following which the men allegedly shouted at him and slapped him multiple times.

The shop owner has since filed a complaint at the Kashimira Police Station, and an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An official confirmed that a probe is underway, and CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed to identify the assailants.

The MNS has long been vocal about promoting Marathi language use in public and commercial spaces across Maharashtra. Just days earlier, on June 28, the party staged a massive protest in Mumbai against the state’s language policy in schools, which includes mandatory teaching of Hindi, English, and Marathi.

Taking to social media, Raj Thackeray reiterated the party’s stand, stating, “There is no question of making Hindi compulsory. Hindi is not the national language.” He further asserted, “When such compulsion was forced upon Maharashtra, we raised our voice and will continue to raise it.”

In another recent statement, Thackeray expressed frustration over what he called the growing trend of glorifying Hindi over Marathi. “People are trying to make the 150 to 200-year-old Hindi language appear superior to Marathi, which has a history of over 3,000 years. This is unacceptable, and I will not allow it,” he declared, opposing the recent education policy changes.
