Maharashtra Govt Withdraws Three-Language GR Amid Opposition Heat; Fadnavis Hits Back at Uddhav’s “Politics”

Mumbai: Facing fierce opposition protests, the Maharashtra government on Sunday rolled back two controversial Government Resolutions (GRs) dated April 16 and June 17, which had mandated a three-language policy in primary schools. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced after a cabinet meeting that the GRs stand cancelled, and a fresh review committee led by Dr. Narendra Jadhav will re-examine the policy with inputs from all stakeholders. The government has assured it will act on the committee’s recommendations once submitted.

Responding to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former CM Uddhav Thackeray, who dramatically burned a copy of the GR as a mark of protest, Fadnavis accused him of hypocrisy:

“When Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister, he had accepted the Mashelkar panel’s suggestions on implementing three-language policy — Marathi, Hindi and English — from Class 1. His cabinet had approved the panel’s recommendation, but he is doing politics now,” Fadnavis remarked at a press conference held jointly with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar on the eve of the state legislature’s monsoon session.

Fadnavis also emphasised that Marathi would remain a compulsory language, countering allegations of sidelining the state language:

“They are only protesting against Hindi, but they have accepted English,” he added, defending the government’s stance.

Earlier in the day, Uddhav Thackeray led a protest in south Mumbai, burning copies of the June 17 GR to underline his party’s opposition. He argued that the Shiv Sena (UBT) is not against Hindi but resents what he called its “imposition”:

“By burning copies of the GR, we demonstrate our rejection of it. While we don’t oppose Hindi, we will not tolerate its forced imposition. The government fails to comprehend the purpose of our protest. Marathi has been marginalised. How much academic pressure will you place on students?” Thackeray asked, reiterating the party’s stand.
