Heat Tsunami: Why 45°C in Delhi Actually Feels Like 50°C This Week

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi as the capital battles an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 45°C and “feels-like” conditions nearing a blistering 50°C. The warning remains active for June 10-11, with forecasts predicting the mercury may climb further in coming days.

All five major weather stations recorded dangerous spikes, with Ayanagar hitting 45.3°C and Ridge station registering 44.9°C by 8:30 AM Tuesday. Monday’s peak saw IGNOU sizzle at 45.5°C, while Safdarjung and Lodhi Road recorded 43.4°C and 43.3°C respectively. The Times of India reported the heat index – factoring in humidity – made conditions feel like 49°C.

The IMD warns Northwest India will endure similar extremes for 4-5 days, urging residents to avoid daytime exposure. Authorities have activated heat action plans, including extended water distribution and cooling shelters. Doctors report rising cases of heatstroke, advising hydration and light clothing.

This heatwave follows an unusually dry May, with power demand surging 25% as air conditioners run non-stop. The crisis has reignited debates on urban planning, with experts blaming concrete sprawl for worsening the “heat island” effect.
