Kolkata: In a strategic political move, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday announced Alifa Ahmed as its official candidate for the upcoming Kaliganj Assembly by-election in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The bypoll is scheduled for June 19, 2025.
Alifa Ahmed, the daughter of late TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed, is set to make her political debut by contesting from the very seat her father had long held with distinction. The announcement was made on social media platform X, where the party stated, “AITC, under the inspiration and guidance of Hon’ble Chairperson Smt. @MamataOfficial, we are pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for June 19, 2025. Kaliganj candidate (is) Alifa Ahmed.”
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of Nasiruddin Ahamed, affectionately known as ‘Lal da’, who passed away at the age of 70. A seasoned politician and popular figure in the region, Ahamed had represented Kaliganj multiple times — securing victories in 2011 and 2021, with a brief hiatus in 2016.
With this nomination, the TMC appears to be banking on both emotional connect and political continuity. Alifa’s candidature is expected to evoke sympathy among voters while also signaling a generational shift.
Kaliganj is viewed as a key constituency for the ruling party, both politically and symbolically. Following a recent revision of the electoral rolls, the constituency has approximately 2.5 lakh registered voters.
The Election Commission had earlier announced that by-elections in five assembly seats across four states, including Kaliganj, will be held on June 19. As per the official schedule, the last date for filing nominations is June 2, scrutiny of papers will take place on June 3, and candidates will be allowed to withdraw their names till June 5. The vote counting is scheduled for June 23.
