Tehran: During his official visit to Iran, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended an olive branch to India, expressing readiness to engage in peace talks to resolve long-standing bilateral issues, including Kashmir, terrorism, water sharing, and trade. His comments came during a joint press conference with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the historic Saadabad Palace in Tehran.

Sharif, who arrived from Turkiye, emphasized, “We want to resolve all disputes, including the Kashmir issue and the water issue, through negotiations and are also ready to talk to our neighbour on trade and counter-terrorism.”

Iran maintained a measured and diplomatic stance on the India-Pakistan matter. Iranian President Pezeshkian voiced support for regional stability, stating that both countries should initiate talks to resolve differences and work toward peace. According to Iranian state media outlet IRNA, Pezeshkian urged a “durable ceasefire” and stressed the need for continued dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei echoed this sentiment in a post on X, saying, “We are delighted with the end of conflicts between Pakistan and India and hope that the differences between the two countries will be resolved.”

Sharif’s peace appeal comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead. In response, India launched precision airstrikes under Operation Sindoor on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
