Kolkata: In a politically significant move, West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has dispatched a five-member delegation to Jammu & Kashmir to take stock of the ground situation following last month’s terror attack in Pahalgam and recent cross-border shelling by Pakistani artillery in border villages.
The delegation, handpicked by TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, comprises four Rajya Sabha MPs—Derek O’Brien, Nadimul Haque, Mamata Bala Thakur, and Sagarika Ghose—along with state minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia.
According to media reports, the delegation will visit Srinagar, Poonch, and Rajouri between May 22 and May 23, where they plan to interact with civilians affected by recent violence. “The delegation will mainly visit places like Srinagar, Poonch, and Rajouri. They will speak to the common people there and try to have an idea about their living conditions amid the terror attack and Pakistan artillery firing,” a senior TMC leader told IANS.
While the party has opted for silence on the specifics of the visit, sources confirmed that the delegation was formed under “strict directives” from the Chief Minister herself. “The selection of the places where the delegation members will visit was also done by the Chief Minister,” the leader added.
Upon their return, the delegation is expected to submit a comprehensive report to Mamata Banerjee, who will decide the party’s future course of action on the issue.
