Sambhal: The historic Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district has once again become the centre of a political and communal flashpoint—this time over a signage change initiated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The mosque, known locally and historically as “Shahi Jama Masjid,” is now slated to be officially renamed as “Juma Masjid” on a new ASI board, raising eyebrows and sparking debate among locals.
The blue-coloured signboard, yet to be installed, is currently under police custody at the Satyavrat police outpost. It is expected to replace the existing board, which for years bore the name “Shahi Jama Masjid”—a term deeply embedded in local identity and historical memory.
However, the ASI has remained tight-lipped about the timing of the new board’s installation, possibly due to the heightened sensitivities surrounding the site. The mosque had previously become the epicentre of a major controversy after a petition claimed it was built over an ancient Hindu temple.
That claim triggered communal unrest on November 24, 2023, when a court-mandated survey was being conducted at the mosque site. Violence erupted in Sambhal’s Kot Garvi locality, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals and injuries to several others.
In the latest development, Samajwadi Party MP Zia ur Rehman Barq, who was summoned by the Uttar Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) for his alleged role in the November 24 violence, arrived at the Sambhal police station earlier this week. However, he declined to speak to the media, offering no comment on the summons or the case.
Moradabad Police Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh confirmed that an FIR had been lodged against MP Zia ur Rehman Barq and the son of a local MLA in connection with the violence that broke out during the mosque survey.
