It’s no secret that General Motors is currently hard at work on a series of electric pickup trucks and SUVs. One of these will be an electric Hummer pickup sold by GMC dealers and built at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant. That’s all that we’ve known thus far about the future vehicle. However, GM Authority has the inside scoop about the vehicle’s performance attributes, and boy is it juicy.
According to sources familiar with future GM product plans, the most potent electric Hummer pickup will offer around 1,000 horsepower, a figure that will enable it to complete the 0-60 mph sprint in 3 seconds (if not slightly faster).
Sources also tell us that driving range will be around 400 miles, “conservatively speaking.”
For the sake of comparison, the range-topping Tesla Cybertruck is rated at 800 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque, with 500 miles of range. The 0-60 sprint is estimated at 2.9 seconds. An electric motor at the front axle and two at the rear, motivating both rear wheels, give it those earth-moving figures.
GM’s electric Hummer pickup truck will be built on the BT1 platform, a variant of the body-on-frame GM T1 platform that underpins the Detroit-based automaker’s bread-and-butter full-size pickup trucks (Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra) and SUVs (Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade).
The truck will be branded as a GMC and be sold at GMC dealerships, which is something that might upset Hummer and/or GMC loyalists.
Those really looking forward to the model won’t have to wait long: a commercial during the upcoming Super Bowl LIV will tease the vehicle, while the very first units are slated to begin arriving at dealers at the end of 2021 and/or early 2022.
