New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Indian Parliament on Thursday, clarifying that the practice of putting illegal immigrants in handcuffs during deportation is a policy followed by the United States. Jaishankar emphasized that such deportations have been occurring since 2009, underscoring the long-standing nature of the practice.
Jaishankar also highlighted concerns regarding Indian citizens falling victim to illegal emigration practices. His remarks came a day after a US military flight brought back approximately 100 immigrants to India.
“The handcuffing of illegal immigrants during deportation is part of the US policy, and this process has been in place for years,” Jaishankar said during the parliamentary session. “However, we are also seeing many Indian citizens being misled by those facilitating illegal emigration, which is a matter of concern for the government.”
The statement follows reports of a US military flight transporting immigrants back to India. Jaishankar urged greater awareness and vigilance around illegal immigration, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of Indian citizens abroad.
India and the US have regularly collaborated on issues related to immigration and deportation, with both nations working to ensure legal processes are followed to safeguard the rights of individuals involved.
