New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the Indian government on Thursday for its handling of the deportation of Indians residing illegally in the United States. She demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar regarding the incident.
A US military aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar on Wednesday, marking the first batch of deportees under the Donald Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. According to the deportees, their hands and legs were shackled for the entire journey and were only unchained after their arrival in Amritsar.
Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress general secretary, expressed her dismay, stating, “A lot of things were said that Modi ji and Trump ji are very good friends. Why did Modi ji let this happen? Couldn’t we have sent our plane to get them?” She further questioned the inhumane treatment, asking, “Is this the way one should behave with people that they are sent back in handcuffs and chains?”
When asked if the External Affairs Minister should provide an explanation, Priyanka Gandhi replied, “He should answer. The PM should give an answer. Is this the way?”
The incident has sparked a political debate on the government’s handling of the issue, with opposition leaders demanding clarity on why such a deportation was carried out in this manner.
