Agartala:: Sometimes freedom comes from a tiny passage after a hard-fought battle. Making her way from the narrow barricade opening in the Indo-Bangla border, was 18-year-old Trishna Adhikary, a resident of Noykathi in the Jhalakati district of Bangladesh.

Trishna was among the 12 fortunate individuals who were able to return to their motherland, Bangladesh. Even though the return of the 11 others came early, they spent around 15 months. Trishna had to stay for a longer period of six years. The Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated from India to their homeland from the Akhaura Integrated Check Post in Agartala.

Trishna had come to Agartala at her aunt’s place in Gandhigram with a relative in 2019. After a month of staying in Agartala, she requested that her aunt drop her back at her home in the neighbouring country. However, on the assurance that she would be sent back soon, the aunt kept on buying time and did not fulfil the demand of Trishna, who was just a 12-year-ol minor at the time. She was often subjected to atrocities by her aunt.

A lady in the neighbourhood came across the plight of young Trishna and found a better place for her to live. The woman brought the young girl to Jawaharlal Nehru Balika Niwas (JNBN). After spending six long years, Trishna did get a chance to meet her mother once, a couple of years ago. But as she did not possess any legal documents, her stay in India eventually increased.

The 11 others who were also detained for not possessing legal documents to enter Indian territory were detained by the law enforcement agencies at Narsinghgarh in Tripura. The 11 adults who entered Indian territory through the porous border said they came in search of better job opportunities and a higher salary by falling prey to the nexus who indulged in illegal activities.

The Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh, who expressed happiness over the repatriation of the Bangladeshi nationals, cautioned, saying that the illegal entry of citizens from both countries will not be tolerated by either side.
