Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reaffirmed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s significant role within the opposition coalition INDIA, despite her party’s decision to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the state independently. Gandhi’s assertion came during a press conference held as part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Basiya, Gumla district.

Addressing the ongoing seat-sharing negotiations among alliance members, Gandhi emphasized unity and cooperation among opposition parties against the ruling BJP. “Mamata-ji is very much part of the INDIA alliance like most of the other members who are part of it,” he stated. “We are having discussions on seat sharing, and that is normal. We respect each other and we are united against the BJP.”

Gandhi’s remarks followed Banerjee’s announcement a week prior, declaring that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), would contest the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal autonomously, without forging an alliance with the Congress. Banerjee had accused the Congress of colluding with the CPI(M) to benefit the BJP’s prospects in the state.

In addition to addressing the situation in West Bengal, Gandhi also commented on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s departure from the INDIA alliance to join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Regarding Kumar’s decision, Gandhi expressed confidence in the INDIA alliance’s ability to contest in Bihar with vigor. “You can guess what would have been the reasons for his leaving,” he remarked. “He has betrayed the people of Bihar and the mandate they gave to the INDIA alliance. We will fight in Bihar as part of the INDIA alliance, and we are confident of winning.”

As the Lok Sabha elections draw nearer, the dynamics within the opposition alliance and the strategic moves made by key political figures like Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar continue to shape the political landscape, reflecting the complexities and challenges of contemporary Indian politics.
