In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s rail infrastructure, a staggering sum of Rs 15,554 crore has been earmarked in the interim budget for the fiscal year 2024-’25. Union Minister for Railways, Communication, Electronics, and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, unveiled this allocation at a press conference in Delhi, signaling a monumental increase compared to previous years.

The substantial financial injection, over 13 times the average annual allocation received by Maharashtra between 2009 and 2014, underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing rail connectivity and bolstering the transportation network in the state.

Central Railway, a pivotal player in the region, stands to benefit significantly from the allocated funds. With a total plan outlay of Rs 10,611.82 crore for FY ’24-’25, Central Railway is poised for transformative development. Notable components of the budget include a Rs 1,941 crore allocation for new railway line projects within the state, aimed at enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth.

Key projects slated for implementation include the Ahmednagar-Beed-Parli Vaijnath line, Baramati-Lonand line, and Wardha-Nanded line, among others. Additionally, Rs 300 crore has been allocated for the gauge conversion of the Pachora-Jamner line, reflecting a comprehensive approach to modernizing Maharashtra’s rail infrastructure.

The budget also addresses critical aspects such as traffic facilities, road safety works, rail overbridges (ROBs), and Rail Underbridges (RUBs), with a collective allocation of Rs 756 crore. Furthermore, substantial investments have been earmarked for customer amenities, track renewals, bridge and tunnel works, signalling, telecommunication projects, and electrification initiatives.

In addition to the substantial allocation for rail infrastructure, the interim budget allocates a staggering Rs 25,000 crore for the bullet train project, reaffirming the government’s commitment to revolutionizing the country’s transportation sector. The bullet train project, aimed at connecting major metros Mumbai and Ahmedabad, symbolizes a paradigm shift towards high-speed rail connectivity and technological advancement.

Officials anticipate that the infusion of funds will not only expedite the construction of high-speed rail corridors but also catalyze job creation, economic growth, and an enhanced travel experience for passengers. With Maharashtra’s rail infrastructure poised for significant expansion and modernization, these developments are expected to usher in a new era of prosperity and connectivity for the state.
