In a significant address to the assembly, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao revealed the state government’s robust initiatives aimed at curbing female foeticide. Rao outlined a comprehensive plan encompassing legislative amendments, policy formulation, and the establishment of a state-level task force to tackle this critical issue.
The minister stressed the urgency of addressing female foeticide cases through a collaborative effort between health and police departments. To this end, a CID probe has been initiated to investigate reported incidents, underlining the necessity for cohesive action.
Rao elaborated on the proposed measures, including the formation of sub-division-level monitoring committees and the deployment of dedicated officers to enhance coordination in handling cases related to female foeticide. Expressing deep concern over the declining gender ratio in the state, he cited civil registration data indicating a decrease from 947 females per 1,000 men to 929, signaling a worrisome trend.
Responding to concerns raised by various MLAs, including Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, regarding the escalating instances of female foeticide, Rao emphasized the pivotal role of joint operations between health and police departments. The envisioned state-level task force aims to expedite actions against any unlawful activities related to female foeticide.
Furthermore, plans are underway to establish sub-division level monitoring committees and appoint an ACP-level officer dedicated to effectively addressing cases associated with female foeticide. These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to combatting this social menace and safeguarding the gender balance in Karnataka.
