The Election Commission has taken action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, issuing a show-cause notice following his controversial ‘panauti’, ‘pickpocket’, and loan-waiver remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi’s comments, specifically labeling PM Modi as a “panauti” (bad omen) during a political rally in Rajasthan’s Jalore, where he attributed India’s World Cup final loss to the Prime Minister’s presence, drew sharp criticism. Subsequently, in another rally in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, Gandhi compared Modi to a pickpocket, mentioning figures such as Adani and Amit Shah.

The Election Commission’s notice to Rahul Gandhi stated that the BJP lodged a complaint regarding his statements on November 22, 2023, alleging that Gandhi’s remarks were disrespectful and violated various legal and electoral code provisions. The BJP asserted that Gandhi’s comparison of the Prime Minister to a pickpocket and the allegation of Rs. 14,00,000 crore loan waivers were unfounded and violated legal sections, including the R. P. Act and IPC provisions.

The notice requested Gandhi to provide an explanation for his statements by November 25, 2023, highlighting that failure to respond would lead to the Commission taking appropriate action as deemed fit.

The Election Commission’s intervention comes in response to the controversial remarks made by Rahul Gandhi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent political rallies, sparking a heated debate over their appropriateness and legality.
