Army to increase its range and strike capacity with induction of artillery guns like K9 Vajra, Howitzer M-777, Dhanush, Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, and mounted artillery guns, which were tested by December 2019Â
New Delhi: Almost after three decades, the Indian Army’s artillery arsenal will add more muscle to its firepower in 2020. In a major boost to the army’s firepower, five artillery guns like Dhanush and Vajra will be inducted into the service this year. These powerful guns have been developed indigenously, under the Make In India program.
Apart from Dhanush and Vajra, the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) will also be included in the army’s arsenal. The ATAGS holds the world record for precisely hitting a target up to a 48 km-range. Their tests were concluded in December 2019.Â
Prior to this, it was in 1988 that the Bofors gun were inducted into the artillery. Bofors continue to be the most powerful gun in the artillery. The 52-caliber ATAGS has the highest strike range of 48 km. It holds the world record for maximum range in this caliber.
K9 Vajra Guns
The Indian Army is buying 100 K9 Vajra from South Korea. This 155 mm/52-caliber gun has a range of 30 km. South Korea is set to send 10 guns in the first shipment. The remaining 90 will be developed by private sector company Larsen & Toubro under the Make in India program. It will cost $615.2 million. Vajra will be used primarily in desert and plain areas. This gun will considerably enhance the strike capability of Army’s strike corps. These guns have been inducted into the Army.
US Howitzer M-777
Under a fast-track agreement, India decided to buy 145 light-weight M-777 Howitzer guns for $715 million. Primarily, the US will be sending 25 guns, and the remaining 120 guns will be developed indigenously by private sector company Mahindra Defense. This 155 mm/39-caliber gun has a range of 30 km – 40 km. The noted specialty of the world’s most sophisticated gun is that it is very light. They can be easily transported to remote hilly areas on helicopters. The Army has received its first consignment.
ATAGS
Recently, the Indian Army successfully test-fired the ATAGS in Pokhran. Public and private sector are jointly manufacturing this advanced gun developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This gun is being manufactured by the Ordnance Factory Board, Tata, and Kalyani group. This 18-ton 155 mm/52-caliber gun has the highest range of 48 km. It holds the world record for the highest strike range in this caliber. This gun works on the fire-and-forget system. This means that it precisely hits its preset target. It can function equally well during the day and night. The Army is going to buy 150 ATAGS for $473.9 million.
New Mounted Gun
Army’s Jabalpur Gun Carriage Factory has developed a new mounted gun system. This 155 mm/52-caliber gun can be mounted on any truck. Its range is 40 km. This gun can fire multiple rounds in a short duration. It was featured in Defense Expo of 2018. It is undergoing a series of tests. It will be manufactured in collaboration with the private sector. The Army has shown a lot of interest in this, and it is ready to buy it.
Dhanush
Dhanush – an indigenously developed gun in India, is similar to the Bofors Haubits FH77. The Jabalpur Gun Carriage Factory has developed this 155 mm gun. Its design was prepared by the Gun Carriage Board. The development tests of this gun concluded in 2018, and manufacturing began in 2019. The Dhanush gun has a strike range of 38 km, whereas the strike range of Bofors is 29 km. Bofors is not automatic, whereas, the Dhanush Gun has a computer fitted, electronic system with automatic controls. This means that it can load and fire rounds automatically. The barrel of Dhanush does not heat up even after hours of continuous firing.
Along with induction of new guns, the Army is also focusing on increasing the strike capability of its old guns. Apart from Bofors, the Army has 105 mm and 130 mm guns dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. They have a limited strike range. These guns are only able to fire 3.4 kg shells. After upgrade, these guns will be able to easily fire 8 kg shells. This will greatly increase the strike capacity. The Army has begun work on upgrading 300 of these. The 130 mm gun is being upgraded to 155 mm/45-caliber. The upgradation will take two years, with cost for each gun tuned to $98,630.
