Srinagar: Kargil Victory Day or Kargil Vijay Diwas is the day when we celebrate India’s victory over Pakistan in Kargil war during Operation Vijay on July 26th 1999. Today on the 23rd anniversary of Kargil Victory Day, we commemorate the sacrifices made by the soldiers of the Indian Armed forces.

The brave soldiers of Indian Army displayed indomitable courage to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, hostile terrain, weather and a determined enemy occupying dominating heights on the mountain tops of North Kargil districts in Ladakh, to win the Kargil war.

July 26 is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour the lives of the brave soldiers who laid their lives on the frontlines to secure a victory against the aggressive enemies and lived up to the motto of ‘Service before Self’.  Heroes like Captain Vikram Batra, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Lieutenant Balwan Singh, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, and Naik Digendra Kumar are few amongst those 527-armed forces personnel whose accomplishments will be etched in our collective memories forever.

Kargil is one of the highest battlegrounds in the World which lies 200 KMs from the capital of Kashmir, Srinagar. It has an average temperature of sub-zero (-50 degrees Celsius). The enemies planned to cut off lines of communications between Kashmir valley and the areas of Ladakh but the gallant soldiers of the Indian Army triumphed over the Pakistani invaders with undaunted courage & determination. This day is celebrated all over India and in the national capital, New Delhi where the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year.

Kargil victory flame is our proud symbol of victory remembrance of 23rd Anniversary of Successful Culmination of Operation Vijay.

The victory flame which was flagged off on June 18 from Udhampur reached Drugmulla on Thursday where it was handed over to the Commanding Officer (CO) 41 Rashtriya Rifles (41 RR) by CO 28 RR. The victory flame was brought to the Hajipir Brigade war memorial where wreath laying by various military and civilian dignitaries, veer naris and school children was carried out. After this, the Kargil victory flame will traverse to Tangdhar, Keran, Macchal, Dawar & further on July 26 after completing a journey of almost 400 Km in valley in approximately 40 days, the Kargil victory flame will be merged with external flame at Kargil war memorial flame on Kargil Vijay Divas.

The event where almost 500 civilians and military personnel were present including Bike rally and cultural program by school children of Army Goodwill School (AGS) Trehgam, AGS Wayne, Rehmat Alam Private School and two renowned Karate institutes of Kupwara town.
