Srinagar: Scores of ASHA workers on Tuesday held a protest demonstration at Kupwara to press for their demand for implementation of the Minimum Wages Act”. They sought government employee status, enhancement in and timely hike in salary, supply of special kits, adequate protection, besides insurance cover.

“In the Pandemic, we were working as a frontline warrior, putting our life in risk that too without monthly wages, at times our workers don’t have money for travelling from one place to another. Paying us a few hundred rupees which is a sheer injustice with health workers like us,” said an Asha worker.

“We do our job selflessly despite all the difficulties, even during the pandemic.

The government must acknowledge the improvement of health status of the poor, especially of mothers and infants, and concede to our justified demands, “she said

“Our workers who are engaged in red-containment zones lack basic health equipments,” argued an angry Asha worker.

Meanwhile’ they appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to release the pending salaries and provide monthly wages to all frontline workers with an incentive allowance of Rs 25’000 per month, otherwise our protest will continue.
