In a startling revelation, Maharashtra Cyber officials have identified over 15 lakh cyberattacks launched against India’s critical infrastructure in recent weeks. The probe links these cyber intrusions to seven Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and parts of the Middle East. Officials confirmed the spike in cyber activity began shortly after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
Despite the overwhelming number of attempts, only 150 attacks were successful, most of them minor in nature, according to top officials.
“We have traced these coordinated cyberattacks to hostile APT groups using a wide array of methods, including malware injection, GPS spoofing, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, and website defacement,” said Additional Director General of Police (Cyber) Yashasvi Yadav.
Yadav further clarified that no critical breach occurred in key institutions like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, aviation networks, municipal digital infrastructure, or the Election Commission’s systems, despite multiple online claims suggesting otherwise.
These developments are part of Maharashtra Cyber’s latest intelligence analysis titled “Road of Sindoor”, which builds upon a previous internal study “Echoes of Pahalgam”. The new report attributes the attacks to seven hostile hacker groups:
- APT 36
- Pakistan Cyber Force
- Team Insane PK
- Mysterious Bangladesh
- Indo Hacks Sec
- Cyber Group HOAX 1337
- National Cyber Crew
Officials say these groups had been lying low but activated their networks in a synchronized effort following India’s military and strategic response under Operation Sindoor.
Cybersecurity experts believe these cyberattacks are part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy targeting India’s digital infrastructure. Authorities have since ramped up defensive measures and are working with central agencies to monitor further attempts.
“These cyber threats may not have caused major damage yet, but they are a clear warning. India’s digital backbone needs constant upgrading to stay ahead of hostile entities,” said a senior official involved in the probe.
