Delhi: Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday mounted a strong defence of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), crediting the UPA government for introducing what he described as one of India’s most impactful welfare programmes. He criticised the Centre for altering the funding structure of the scheme and accused it of weakening a lifeline for rural India.
Speaking on the issue, Tewari said MNREGA has consistently delivered results by providing guaranteed employment to millions of rural households and supporting village-level economic stability. He described the law as the most successful social welfare initiative launched in independent India, particularly during times of economic distress.
The Congress leader also took aim at what he termed as an attempt to create artificial divisions in India’s cultural and historical legacy. Referring to Mahatma Gandhi’s final moments, Tewari said Gandhi’s last words, “Hey Ram”, symbolised harmony rather than separation. He argued that efforts to pit Gandhi against Lord Ram distort India’s inclusive traditions.
On the policy front, Tewari expressed concern over changes in MNREGA funding. He pointed out that the scheme was originally designed as a centrally sponsored programme with strong financial backing from the Union government. According to him, gradually shifting the financial burden onto state governments undermines the effectiveness of the scheme and places additional strain on state finances.
Tewari warned that reduced central support could lead to delays in wage payments and fewer workdays for rural workers. He urged the government to restore full financial commitment and respect the original intent of the law, which was to provide dignity, employment and economic security to rural citizens.
