New Delhi: Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary has raised serious concerns over the violence that broke out during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad, West Bengal, questioning the motives and timing behind the unrest.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Chaudhary said, “The violence taking place in West Bengal—why were people incited? Why were they brought to the streets, and how were they motivated? Sometimes we have seen movements that are outrageous, not even a proper movement, but outrageous acts. If the government tackles them at the right time, there will be no damage or loss…”

The minister’s remarks come amid escalating tensions in Murshidabad, where clashes erupted between protesters and security forces, leading to several injuries and widespread disruption. The protests were reportedly sparked by opposition to the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Chaudhary emphasized the need for proactive governance and timely intervention to prevent such incidents from spiraling into violence. While he did not directly name any political party or organization, his comments hinted at a deeper concern over the politicization of public sentiment and its misuse for disruptive ends.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, which received Presidential assent on April 5, aims to streamline the management of waqf properties and introduce reforms in registration and governance. However, its passage has sparked controversy in several regions, including West Bengal, with opposition leaders alleging that the Act undermines minority rights.
