Chandigarh: Amidst the internal elections for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president, senior leader Grewal took a firm stand against what he termed as “external criticism” from rival parties, asserting that the SAD remains a significant force despite not being in power.

“Today is the election for the SAD President, and yet we see leaders from the rebel faction, Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, BJP, and even MPs criticising us. We are neither in government nor hold a majority — why do these parties feel so threatened by us?” Grewal questioned, hinting at the enduring relevance of the party in Punjab’s political landscape.

The remarks came as the SAD held its internal election to choose its next president, an event closely watched by political observers, particularly as the party charts a path toward revival ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.

Grewal asserted that the Akali Dal is undergoing a strategic transformation. “We are preparing for a political resurgence. The party will emerge stronger and more united, and we are confident that the people of Punjab will rally behind us once again,” he said.

Echoing his optimism, J. Sohal, leader of the SAD women’s wing, praised the energy and participation seen during the event. “There is a new wave of enthusiasm. The kind of turnout we’ve seen today shows that people still believe in the values and legacy of the Akali Dal,” she said.

The Akali Dal, once a dominant political force in Punjab, has faced significant setbacks in recent years. However, Saturday’s developments and strong rhetoric from its leaders signal the party’s determination to reclaim its ground and reassert itself as a key player ahead of 2027.
