Dhaka: In a dramatic twist to Bangladesh’s political landscape, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has clinched a sweeping victory in the 13th general election, thrusting Tarique Rahman, the party’s long-time scion, into the spotlight as the likely next Prime Minister. Rahman, who contested and won in both constituencies he stood for, now emerges as the face of the BNP’s historic comeback after decades in opposition.
The Rise of Tarique Rahman
Born on November 20, 1965, in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman is the eldest son of former president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, two of Bangladesh’s most iconic political figures. Growing up in the heart of political power, Rahman joined the BNP at the grassroots level in 1988, quickly climbing the ranks to become senior joint secretary general. Over the years, he took on leadership roles during times of crisis, including acting as the party chief when his mother faced imprisonment and health challenges.
Years in Exile and Return to Politics
In 2008, Rahman left Bangladesh for London, citing politically motivated persecution. His 17-year absence coincided with a difficult period for the BNP, marked by internal divisions and declining grassroots influence. However, in December 2025, his return to Bangladesh immediately reshaped the party’s fortunes.
Just five days after returning, the political landscape was further transformed by the passing of his mother, Khaleda Zia, closing a historic chapter in the Zia family’s political legacy. Rahman, now 60, assumed full control of the BNP and became the central figure in its election campaign.
Election Triumph and Public Support
Rahman’s return galvanized BNP supporters nationwide. His rallies attracted large crowds, reinvigorating the party’s traditional voter base and leveraging the enduring legacy of his father, General Ziaur Rahman.
In the elections, Rahman won decisively in both Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17. In Dhaka-17, he polled 72,699 votes, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate S M Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes, securing a margin of 4,399 votes. Election officials confirmed that voting occurred across 125 centers, including postal ballots.

With the BNP heading toward a commanding majority, Tarique Rahman’s ascendancy marks more than just a personal victory; it signals a revival of the Zia family’s political influence. Analysts say his leadership could steer Bangladesh into a new chapter, potentially reshaping the country’s governance after decades dominated by Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.
