Ayodhya: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a scathing attack on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, defending the government’s spending on the annual Deepotsav festival. Speaking at the ninth edition of the event in Ayodhya, Yogi contrasted the present celebrations with past violence, saying, “Where they once fired bullets, we now light diyas.”

The CM was responding to Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks a day before Diwali questioning the expenditure on lighting diyas and candles. “Cities around the world light up for Christmas for months. Why do we need to spend money on diyas?” Akhilesh had asked during a press conference.

Yogi recalled the tragic incidents under the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led SP government in 1990 when police opened fire on kar sevaks. “Congress called Lord Ram a myth. Samajwadi Party fired bullets at Ram devotees. They renamed Ayodhya as Faizabad. We restored its dignity as Ayodhya Dham,” the CM said, emphasising the government’s efforts to revive the city’s spiritual heritage.

The Chief Minister also criticised opposition parties for boycotting the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in January 2024. The grand event witnessed the lighting of over 26 lakh diyas across 56 ghats, with artists portraying Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman arriving by helicopter to recreate the Pushpak Vimana landing, followed by a symbolic Rajyabhishek of Ram and Sita.

“These lamps are symbols of our 500-year struggle for faith. Lord Ram, who once lived in a tent, now resides in a grand temple,” Yogi said, highlighting the government’s commitment to cultural and spiritual restoration in Ayodhya.
