With the Maharashtra Assembly elections approaching, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar revealed that several political parties have requested the Election Commission to announce the poll dates keeping in mind major festivals like Diwali, Dev Diwali, and Chhath Puja.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Saturday, the CEC said, “We have come here to assess the preparedness for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra. We held discussions with the leaders of national and regional parties, as well as key stakeholders, including the District Magistrates, Commissioners of Police, and the Director General of Police.”

Kumar further stated that representatives from 11 political parties, including BSP, AAP, CPI(M), Congress, MNS, SP, and both factions of the Shiv Sena, have expressed their concerns about the timing of the elections. “They have asked us to consider the festive season, especially Diwali, Dev Diwali, and Chhath Puja, before announcing the dates of the elections,” ANI quoted Kumar as saying.

The CEC noted that the term of the current Maharashtra Legislative Assembly ends on November 26, necessitating the completion of elections before this date. He shared detailed statistics about the state’s electorate, which stands at 9.59 crore, with 4.64 crore female voters and 4.59 crore male voters. “First-time voters in the 18-19 age group are also quite encouraging, around 19.48 lakh,” he added.

During his visit, Kumar expressed dissatisfaction with the Maharashtra administration’s alleged failure to comply with the directive to relocate officials who have served in their home districts or current postings for more than three years. “Despite clear instructions from the Election Commission, the state is reluctant to transfer revenue officers to key positions,” Kumar said, asking the Chief Secretary for an explanation regarding this delay.

The Election Commission has demanded a response from the Chief Secretary (CS) and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra for their failure to fully implement its orders on the transfer of officials ahead of the elections. The EC emphasized the need for unbiased and effective administrative functioning to ensure free and fair elections.

This visit by the CEC comes as the state gears up for a highly anticipated electoral battle, with key players like the BJP, Shiv Sena, and Congress preparing their strategies. Political analysts expect that the timing of the elections, coupled with the festival season, could significantly impact voter turnout and campaigning.

As the Election Commission finalizes its preparations, all eyes are on the announcement of the election dates, which will set the stage for a critical political contest in Maharashtra.
