WhatsApp to Introduce ‘Log Out Without Data Loss’ Feature in Upcoming Update: Report

New Delhi: In a much-awaited development, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to log out of their primary account without deleting their data — a major change from the current limitations.

As per a report by Android Authority in collaboration with AssembleDebug, the feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta version (2.25.17.37). Currently, WhatsApp only allows users to log out from linked devices, like tablets and web browsers. But logging out from the main device — such as your smartphone — requires deleting the account entirely, resulting in data loss.

The new feature, found under Settings > Account, will present users with two options: either erase all data or “keep all data and preferences.” The second option effectively functions like uninstalling WhatsApp without losing chats, media, or group data.

According to the report, this new log-out capability will offer users greater control over their WhatsApp sessions. It’s especially useful for those who want to take a break from the app or resolve technical glitches without losing conversations.

The report further indicates that users may also be able to log out from one account and switch to another on the same device — a functionality that aligns with WhatsApp’s growing focus on multi-account support.

The feature appears to be in internal testing for now. A screenshot from the beta build showed the word “Internal” labeled on the logout setting, suggesting limited access. However, it’s expected that the feature will gradually roll out to more users in future beta versions before a wider public release.
